A third-party mod that lets you play with Valve Half Life 2 in room-scale virtual reality will be available in public beta starting around noon ET. The developers, Source VR Mod Team, offer it for free; you just need to own the base game which is currently $9.99 (spotted thanks to Tech Radar).

The mod’s Steam listing is here, and it claims to be widely compatible with wired VR headsets that include tracked motion controllers, like Valve’s Index and HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality models. Presumably, this will work just fine if you, like me, connect your Meta Quest 2 via USB cable or wirelessly to your PC. I will try this weekend.

The developers seem to have found clever ways to let you interact with the environment, vehicles, and weapons. Controls specifics and must-read disclaimers regarding the VR experience are listed here. I’m excited to try melee attacks, which was missing from Half-Life: Alyx. The team says that since this is a beta release, you’ll likely encounter some “roughness” and can submit bugs here if you wish.

Whether you played Half-Life: Alyx however (you absolutely should) checking out this mod could be a fun way to spend a few hours. However, be aware that while you typically use teleport mode to get around in VR games, there isn’t currently, and the developers say they don’t know if it will get the feature later. Also be aware that vehicle rides “require strong VR legs,” so be prepared to pace yourself for these sections of the game or else you might get sick to your stomach.
