Discord is launching its new Forum Channels feature today in an effort to help server owners organize conversations. Forum channels act as threaded conversation topics that prompt Discord users to talk about a particular topic. They will be useful for busy servers where it is easy to interrupt ongoing conversations.

Forum channels appear as sub-channels and can be used by server owners to branch off conversations on particular topics or to avoid having to create another channel for targeted conversations.

“Like threads and text-in-voice before, forum channels allow focused conversations to thrive without monopolizing a channel,” Discord explains in a blog post. “No more watching an interesting discussion drown, get hijacked or abandoned because it sat stale for a few hours. More than ever, every conversation now has a place on Discord.

Discord’s forum channels are designed to help improve conversations.

Just like text and voice channels, Discord community server owners can create an unlimited number of forum channels. This should help direct conversations in the #general sections of servers and provide a more structured and sustainable alternative to the temporary thread system that Discord currently has.

Forum channels also have their own set of permissions, and server owners can create separate guidelines for each forum to help Discord members understand what the channel will be used for. Discord’s AutoMod is compatible with forum strings, and most bots or apps that help moderate discussions should also work.

Discord begins rolling out its Forum Channels feature today after months of testing with its communities. This follows a day after Discord launched voice calling for Xbox consoles. Xbox gamers can now join Discord voice calls from their consoles and chat with friends on PC in a move that will help improve cross-play.
